Captain's Pick

How do handicaps and net scoring work in Captain's Pick?

Last updated

Enter each player's Handicap Indexonce, on the Players tab. For every round the app works out a Course Handicap for the tee they are playing, applies the allowance for that round's format, and puts the stroke dots on the card.

How is the course handicap calculated?

With the World Handicap System formula: Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par), using the rating and slope of the tee assigned to the player. Nine-hole rounds use nine-hole values. Each round has a Use course handicap switch; turn it off and players play straight off their index, which some groups prefer for a trip handicap.

What allowance does each format use?

  • Singles match play: 100%.
  • Four-ball: 90% in match play.
  • Foursomes:one side handicap, 50% of each partner's course handicap.
  • Chapman: 60% of the low partner plus 40% of the high.
  • Scramble: 35% / 15% for two players; 25% / 20% / 15% / 10% for four, lowest handicap first.
  • Team quota:no strokes on holes; each player's quota is 36 minus their course handicap.

These follow the USGA's Appendix C recommendations, applied to the unrounded course handicap and rounded once. The commissioner can change the allowance or the team split for any round in its settings.

How are strokes given in match play?

Strokes are taken on the holes with the lowest stroke index. In match formats the usual rule is off the low handicap: the lowest Playing Handicap in the match plays off zero and the others get the difference. The app supports that and the full-handicap alternative; the round settings say which is in use.

Can I override a number?

Yes. Edit any player's index on the Players tab (plus handicaps are supported) and change a player's tee for a round on the Rounds tab. For the reasoning behind the allowances, read how to run a Ryder Cup-style trip.
